In the Beginning the Dance is about The healing of three generations of a spirited but dysfunctional Pueblo family. The eldest generation, Simon, calls upon the tribe's medicine woman for healing and, in the process, affords the entire community a chance to heal and re-empower itself. His son, Frank, is a talented substance-abusing Indian performance poet and musician. His anger is assuaged when he learns the truth about his mother's death. Simon's grandson, Dayone, shifts from drugs and dark, hostile acting-out to tribal respect after a vision quest with his grandfather. The inner struggles of a young Indian woman who gives up a prestigious fellowship at Cambridge to return and study the old ways with the village's 90-year-old medicine woman. The struggles of a brilliant, young Jewish doctor to learn the difference between doctoring and healing, while fencing with his dying grandfather about the current policies of Israel. The attempts by the Feds to convince the tribe to store nuclear waste on tribal lands, which causes a schism between the moderns and the traditionals. Plus ça change. In the Beginning the Dance is a present-day, multi-generational intersection of Native American and Jewish themes—conflicting with modernity on a fictional northern New Mexican Pueblo. It is a transformational drama about the power of women, lost and found, about stubborn men and their softening at the hands of their community, about the disconnect between the government and things sacred.

In the Beginning the Dance a novel Lanny Cotler 9780615497525 Books

Lanny Cotler is a magnificent writer, and "In The Beginning The Dance" is a beautiful, well-told story filled with powerful images, well-developed characters, absorbing conflicts, a compelling love story and many delightful surprises. It is extremely entertaining and yet there are many valuable lessons to be learned here concerning the Jewish and Native American experience, modern medical cures vs. traditional healing, rebellious children, and a government that covets sacred Native American lands to bury its most dangerous mistakes.
I highly recommend it. I'm about to read it again.

I know this book inside and out; it will open your mind to seeing the familiar in a whole new way.
A surreal Robbinsesque fever dream that becomes more lucid the further into in one delves.
I loved getting into the heads of the characters of "In the Beginning the Dance". The people and scenarios crystallize the zeitgeist of the collective consciousness of North Americans who have tuned back into living, speaking, dancing, singing their truth. The story artfully interweaves ancient wisdom, modern wisdom, humor and sensuality. It is a story I will share and will read again.
In this novel, Lanny has blended seemingly disparate ingredients to produce a hybrid story of contrasting cultures clashing, love, family drama, indigenous education, and unique lessons on living and dying.

The story invited me in, teased me, tried my patience in the middle for awhile, then surprised and more-than-satisfied me at the end, which I found riveting.

I highly recommend this to anyone looking for a provocative, thoughtful read.

Hi Lanny, I am Carl's spiritual sister and wanted to tell you that I loved your book "In the Beginning the Dance." Each character was rich with emotion and authentic reverence to the culture, ceremonies, and struggles. I could feel Carl's energy and life experiences throughout, enriched by your heartfelt soul and mellifluous storytelling skills. Let's envision it as a film to be seen on the big screen. I did so when I first read his original manuscript of "Dancing Healers."
Congratulations, blessings, and wishes for continued success,
Dr. Joyce Mills
What a rich, multicultural feast, liberally sprinkled with colorful characters worth caring about -- a Jewish doctor who passes up a cushy job at a San Francisco hospital to care for Native Americans on a Pueblo Indian reservation in New Mexico; a young woman who foregoes a fellowship opportunity at Cambridge to study language and herbal science under the tutelage of an elderly medicine woman; a wise old grandfather who struggles with a conflict between modern medicine and the ancient healing rites of his tribe. All this and more is played out in a riveting story that takes the reader from New York to Tel Aviv to Santa Fe and echoes memories of Native American genocide and the Jewish Holocaust against a backdrop of New Mexico flora and fauna, generational struggles on a Pueblo reservation and a pivotal conflict regarding a decision to forfeit secred tribal land to create a disposal site for nuclear waste.

In "In the Beginning the Dance" author Lanny Cotler has created a satisfying stew that nourishes the reader's appetite for eye-opening revelations about two separate but strangely similar 21st Century cultures and the human history which spawned them. He has crafted a complex and compelling adventure that plays out on a mystical canvas well worth exploring.
